Face-to-face: the student and the live plant. 200 years of botany teaching in the Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The Department of Morphology and Systematics of Higher Plants of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), the leading educational botanical institution of the Russion Federation, is 200 this year. It has long scientific and educational traditions. The basic accepted forms of teaching are lecture courses, laboratory studies and summer field works. Classical general courses of lectures read at the department for 1-2 year students include anatomy, morphology and systematics of vascular plants. Theoretical knowledge acquired from lectures is supported by laboratory experiments, where students carry out a study of concrete objects. During their first years students also take thematic excursions to the MSU Botanical Gadens and the Main Botanical Gaden of the Russian Academy of Science. III-V-year students of botanical departments receive specialised courses which are accompanied by vast training.
Experience shows that the most important and the most effective element of botanical education is long-term field practices which students have in different ecological regions of Russia in different seasons over all five years of education. Students have an ppportunity to study flora and ecology of most wide-spread plant species, families of a particular area, morphologic diversity of organs.
At the final stage of their practice students carry out researches, which include elements of the biometrical analysis, populational and ecological variability, interesting biological features of plant objects. This researches are often connected with other biological disciplines.
Students' best papers are presented at scientific conferences and published in specialized collections of students' articles. This is particularly important for students as it heightens their competence and competitiveness and enriches their creative skills.
The general sum of the activity of the Department of Higher Plants, the publications and articles, its graduates, the dynamics of its scientific and educational work over the past 200 years have been published in a specialized two-volume edition.
