A survey of fruits, ovaries, and seeds of the Bromelioideae (Bromeliaceae).

Fruit and seed morphology has received little systematic study in Bromeliaceae subfamily Bromelioideae (33 genera, 766 spp.). In the most recent monograph, data on fruits and seeds is provided for approximately 12% and 5% of Bromelioideae species, respectively. Bromelioid ovary morphology has received better documentation but is still deficient for most species. Ovaries and fruits were collected from plants in the field and from cultivated plants in the research collection at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. We report on the morphological and anatomical features scored for ovaries (11 characters), fruits (10 characters) and seeds (9 characters) from 109 species in 16 genera. In general, these reproductive characters appear to be subject to high levels of homoplasy and have limited value in phylogenetic analysis.
