Regional Botany Special Lecture

Fremont and Beyond: Botanizing in the American West.

Dr. Welsh will discuss the colorful history of botanical collecting in North America, especially the western United States. Presented will be an outline of botanical exploration of North America 1819 to present, including the fabled expeditions of Sir John Franklin and Dr. (Sir) John Richardson in the American Arctic, John Charles Fremont and his expeditions to the American West, and some more modern characters such as Marcus Eugene Jones, and those who followed him in pursuit of Astragalus, especially.
