Plenary Address

Colwell, Dr. Rita R. [1].

Organismal Biology in PRIME TIME.

As advances in molecular biology spill into neighboring disciplines, systematic and organismal biology, as well, are achieving higher profile and greater importance. Biocomplexity, Tree of Life, and NEON are illustrative of significant investments being made in the nonmedical biosciences. Much greater investment is needed, however, in the fundamental biological sciences.
The botanical sciences are a case in point. Although the plant genomics and plant sciences, in general, have fared reasonably well, integrative biological science is only just beginning to receive attention. It is neither the best of times, nor the worst of times…budgetarily and, very simply, a strong case can and should be made for significant societal investment.
